In light of Indonesia’s aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 (or sooner) and the country’s foreseeable coal phase-out, this report summarises the existing knowledge about the coal industry in Indonesia.
With its young coal fleet, an energy mix dominated by coal, and local economies in coal regions highly reliant on the mining industry, Indonesia ranks highest in the world for exposure to the effects of a coal phase-out. This makes the transition away from coal challenging, yet at the same time it increases the urgent need for early strategic action.
This report identifies the current relevant knowledge and data gaps that can inform the research agenda in the nexus of a sustainable transition in coal regions and beyond. Two of Indonesia’s main coal regions, East Kalimantan and South Sumatra, are analysed in detail. The report also presents an overview of the gender implications of coal transitions in Indonesia.
