Progress in the Retirement of Coal Facilities in Chile and the Definition of a Just Energy Transition Strategy


This case study contains an overview of the process followed while drafting Chile’s first just energy transition strategy and the current progress being made in Tocopilla, a coal region in the north of the country.

In 2019, there were 28 coal power units distributed among six locations in Chile. Today only 20 of those 28 continue to operate. The majority of the units still operating have a lifetime of less than 15 years, with the newest unit beginning operations in 2019.

This case study outlines Chile’s coal plant retirement plan and the actions taken to approach energy transition challenges with justice. It also explores just energy transition challenges in Tocopilla, a region with a high dependency on coal power generation.
