Solutions Dialogues: First Regional Dialogue, Santiago, Chile

On August 29, 2024, the first regional dialogue of the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA)’s Solutions Dialogues series will take place in Santiago, Chile. The Solutions Dialogues aim to bring together government, business, finance, and civil society leaders to raise ambition and accelerate action to phase out unabated coal power in line with keeping 1.5oC alive.

The series will provide governments and businesses, especially those in coal-dependent countries, with the insights and support they need to overcome challenges in coal-to-clean transitions—in particular, the challenges related to retiring coal plants early, organising a just transition of workers, and managing the power system of the future.

Chile joined the PPCA during COP 26, committing to phase out coal by 2040. Since then, Chile has assumed an active leadership role, and taken significant strides to accelerate its transition from coal to clean energy. In addition, several other countries—including Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico—in Latin America are members of the PPCA, and the experience of all these jurisdictions will provide valuable lessons on coal transition.

The PPCA Solutions Dialogue in Chile, convened by the Ministry of Energy, Chile, the Just Energy Transition in Coal Regions Interregional Platform, and the Powering Past Coal Alliance, will seek to showcase these lessons and the innovative solutions being implemented. It will also work to contribute to the continued momentum for the transition away from coal in Latin America.
