International Forum for Coal Regions in Transition 2024

The International Forum for Coal Regions in Transition is a yearly policy dialogue that brings together key stakeholders from coal regions around the globe to exchange insights, share best practices, and address challenges while exploring innovative solutions for just energy transitions.

The 2024 event will take place from October 14 to 15, 2024 in Pretoria, South Africa and online.

Fostering dialogue among coal regions is crucial for accelerating the shift away from a coal-based, unsustainable energy system towards a climate-resilient energy system while ensuring that no one is left behind.

This year’s sessions will feature presentations from experts across governments, civil society, and unions, as well as other stakeholders. They will cover key topics related to the transition away from coal, such as justice in energy transitions, involvement of labour, economic diversification, and coal mine closure. Once registered, online attendees can choose which sessions they would like to join.

This forum is organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) as part of the Just Energy Transition in Coal Regions – Interregional Platform (JET-CR Platform) and in collaboration with the Just Transition to a Decarbonised Economy for South Africa (JUST SA). The JET-CR platform is implemented in Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Mongolia, South Africa, Thailand, and Vietnam. The project aims to support and accelerate just energy transitions away from coal to low-carbon, climate-resilient energy systems, and to sustainable and just local economies and communities.
