Seminar on Just Energy Transition and Economic Transformation in South Sumatra

To mitigate climate change, the world must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by switching to lower carbon alternatives. Since 2022, Indonesia has launched strategies and action plans for the transition to cleaner energy. In coal-reliant regions such as South Sumatra, there is abundant potential for renewable energy adoption and many potential paths forward for a cleaner future.

To support this transition, the South Sumatra provincial government has established a regional consultation forum aimed at accelerating economic transformation and preparing for a just transition away from coal. The multi-stakeholder forum aims to integrate diverse viewpoints to ensure a fair and inclusive process.

To support this, it is crucial to align perceptions and to explore cooperation opportunities, particularly among academics and non-governmental organisations.

On April 15, 2024, Yayasan Mitra Hijau and Sriwijaya University will hold an in-person seminar with the following objectives:

+ to raise awareness about the importance of a just energy transition and economic transformation in South Sumatra,

+ to inform participants about the establishment of South Sumatra’s new regional consultation forum, including its duties and functions,

+ to discuss the readiness of academics and universities in implementing a just energy transition and economic transformation.
