Navigating Just Energy Transition Together: Shared learnings from South Africa, Indonesia, and Vietnam

This report summarises insights shared between South Africa, Indonesia, and Vietnam during the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) Convening for Exchange and Learning event held on June 27–28, 2023, in Indonesia.

The event was co-hosted by the Ford Foundation, the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), and the African Climate Foundation (ACF), with support from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP).

Both South Africa and Indonesia rely heavily on coal-fired power generation, with the fossil fuel accounting for 84.63% and 61.55% of power generation in each country, respectively. Despite increased efforts to ramp up renewables, both countries struggle to challenge coal’s domination. Vietnam, meanwhile, has the largest renewable energy mix among the three JETP countries, at 48% of its power generation in 2022. It has also pledged to curb coal emissions, despite a large number of young coal-fired power plants.

One major talking point around just energy transition is the adoption of a people-centred approach. A just transition requires addressing social, economic, and environmental concerns while empowering marginalised groups and amplifying their voices.
